| Traditional Internet is mainly about the static data (text, image). And now, it is transforming into kind of synthesize information resources, which includes the matters of static and continuous media. Video-On-Demand (VOD) will be one of the most perspective businesses in broadband network. Compared with traditional TV, it has many unmatchable advantages. For example, it makes consumers control playing programs and choose when and on what mode to play. So it has been focused in the fields of multimedia and network that making VOD comes true.The network ultimately developed to the multimedia applying whose natural trend is all about multi-consumers, big concurrent flowing and high quality. However, VOD adapted to this trend, more concentrates on using high-performance professional servers and improving network bandwidth instead of studying the system architecture. Distributed VOD system is a very important part of large-scale VOD, besides, studying and designing it has remarkable science and value and economic benefits. After I deeply and thoroughly analyzed and compared the designing principle, designing thought, implementing method and excellences and defects of current common VOD system, I bring up an idea that a designing plan which is concerned of a distributed VOD system generally adapted to various large-scaled and medium-scaled network. This system is composed of managing server, distributed video server and client. Compared with traditional concentrated VOD system, it uses ordinary PC as video server, can provide fully mutual request service, has good stretch and high radio of performance-price, improves the reliability and stability of system, and can meet the needs of video requests in various medium-scale, even large-scale network.
