Telecast plays an important role in our daily lives. It's one of the necessary facilities in our lives and amusements. The development of information technology and the higher requirement for television pastime, interactive television attracted more and more attention. The emergence of digital television is one of the most important things in the history of telecast. It can not only improve the quality of audio and video but also change the traditional mode of watching TV. It can provide many incremental operations, such as television website, Video-On-Demand, remote education and information services.Digital television middleware is one of the most important techniques of digital television system. It is a kind of system software that resides between the application and the underlying operation system. It can shield software developers from low-level platform details by providing a set of standard application interface for digital television. Now, digital television gets more and more manufacturer's attention. The research on digital television middleware in the oversea has gained some evolvement. However, it has been done little in our country. So, the research and development of our own digital television middleware have an important academic and applied significance.The research and development about this topic is supported by the project of National 863 Program, Embedded DTV Software Platform. The work mentioned in this paper is mainly about: Firstly, it thoroughly analyzes the DTV middleware such as its architecture, structure features and development trends. It studies the MHP published by DVB organization and presents the design solution of open middleware prototype system based on embedded Linux and Kaffe VM. Secondly, it studies and analyzes the Kaffe AWT and event reaction mechanism. According to the requirement of DTV, it implements the lightweight transforming of Kaffe AWT components and the reconfiguration of class libraries. Thirdly, it studies the implementation mechanism of Qt/Embedded and presents the solution of embedded graphics library in the middleware prototype system. It implements the embedded graphics library and cut it out effectively. Finally, it implements a simple Electronic Program Guide (EPG) according to the application.
