With the high-speed development of video technology (including compression, transmission and storage of video signal) and VLSI, the video monitor system has been widely used in many fields. As the central part of video monitor system, the technology of image grab card has become more and more mature, and there are many kinds of chips that can be used in design. Among them, the image grab card based on PCI bus is the most popular product in the market because of its strength, flexibility and cheapness.In this paper an image grab card and the correlative program driver are designed based on the analysis of the universal technology. This image grab card uses SAA7111 to translate the analogue signal to digital image data. After buffering in an FIFO RAM the data are read into computer by a universal PCI interface chip, PCI9052. Finally the images are displayed on screen. The hardware is designed in Protel99. On the basis of thoroughly understanding the character of the chip by the handbook and solving the key problem of timing matching, we devise the theoretical image. Then taking into account the performance of antijam and the global distribution of lines, the printed circuit is designed. The driver is programmed by Vtoolsd, supporting PnP (plug and play).When we test the image grab card, the maximum frequency of the resulting digital images is 50 frames per second , and the resolution can be 720 X 576. The system can work stably when there are not many other data transmitting in the PCI bus, and can fulfil the target of instant video monitor. Because the hardware and the driver are designed independently, there is much margin to reexpand the system, fixing the compression algorithm and intelligent monitor algorithm in DSPs. What's more, the independence of technology makes it much safer to apply this image grab card to military monitor system.
