Image Based Rendering(IBR) has more advantages than the traditional geometry based rendering technology such as easy modeling, strong reality when it is used in rendering a complex scene. It can be widely used to develop the 3D Virtual Reality (VR) system in the microcomputer. And IBR technology is also a hot research topic in computer graphics at present.After summarizing the basic theories and technologies of VR in civil and abroad, we propose two algorithms that are used to match two successive photos to form a wider range view and develop a VR system called HUVRS. It is well known that there is limit view in the photos taken by a common camera, and a wider range view of image is needed to construct panorama in the VR system. So it is a key problem to find the joint points in successive photos.In the paper, a new matching algorithm based on feature pixel-lined segment is first put forward. By the algorithm we design a method to find a pixel-lined segment with some feature. If the segment is found, it is taken as template. But there is a limitation of stabilization in this method. So another new algorithm based on pyramid is proposed in this paper, which is called as contact-matched algorithm. According to the algorithm we construct the images pyramidal and obtains hierarchal layers. Neighbor images are compared in sequence to find the coarse joint point by omni-matching in the first level. At the second step, a new overlapped area is sampled and done omni-matching again. The step is done repeatedly until to the last level. The process is called coarse-to-fine. In the traditional pyramid method, the template is used and unvaried. But in contact-match algorithm the template is varying, which leads to void dropping into local minimal location. Quicken , better anti-jamming and avoid knowing approximate matching area are the main feature of the algorithm.The further research of matching is done. On the basis of contact-match algorithm, small mismatching area is dealt with optimization method. The method and experimentation are given in the paper.In this paper, we also give some models of panorama. Some important steps to construct the cylinderal virtual reality system and some improved methods used in stitching and real-time displaying.The results from our VR system HUVRS have showm that the algorithms proposed in this paper are right and reliable.
