A distributed virtual environment (DVE) is a distributed application where multiple users are simultaneously present within a simulated 3D space. We call such a shared environment a (virtual) world. It is populated by objects with graphical representations. All users perceive the same world by seeing the same scenes and hearing the same sounds,albeit from separate spatial locations. Each user can navigate through 3D space and see,meet,talk and collaborate with other users in the environment.When there are rather more entities in the virtual world,in order to meet the real-time requirement of the virtual environment,it is necessary to take proper measure to reduce the data transmission traffic. Consequently,it ensures the space-time consistency of entities and better extension of the system.In order to reduce the data transmission traffic,filtering the data stream that will be transmitted can be adopted besides taking DR algorithm and improving communication method. The thesis improves the filter algorithm based on distance and raises the message filter algorithm by grade based on vision calculation combining visual principle. The algorithm performs real-time calculation of the grade value that remote host relatives to the host based on the area the host can see in the virtual environment. According to the grade value,the system divides the entities into different grades and sends different grade's data adopting various standards in order to reduce the amount of communication data of the low-grade entities. Finally,the thesis builds the sketch of a prototype system applying the message filter algorithm.
