Electronic information product has been the mark of civilization and advancement of the modern information society. Since coming into the 90th, two remarkable characters appear as to the designing of electronic information product, one is that the product get more and more complex; the other is that time is shorter to coming into market. So it is necessary to apply semiconductor technology, computer technology and intelligence and ability to better the electronic product design. EDA product proves the successful application of this. The popularization of EDA tools fit for the two characters (the more complexity and the shorter time); whereas, to develop more complex product forces designers depend more on the advanced EDA tools.Since the idea of ASIC was put forward, it has made rapid progress, which marked a new phase for the integrated circuits (1C):A hardware design phase of ASIC and system integrity . Structural Level design methodology become possible for the perfect of 1C design methodology and the enhancement of the CAD tools.There are many methodologies for designing ASIC. Custom design approach is discussed in this paper. It's suitable for the design of chips that has high performance and large needs .The approach includes system design, logic synthesis, simulation, placement and routing, and etc.As an example, the design process of an ASIC for frequency measuring is discussed detailed to show how to use this approach quickly and successfully.With this method, combined with a 2um technology hi the MECCAS, we succeeded in developing this chip.
