Internet develops at very fast speed, it accelerate the broadband network technology and broadband network construct. The conception of "Broadband" is more and more popular. The serves, such as Video-On-Demand, Net meeting and Distance Teaching has a strong appeal to people. At present, there are different modes of broadband access: Ethernet, ADSL, Cable Modem (HFC) and wireless broadband. In such many ways of broadband access, the Ethernet appears huge potential; it has become the mainstream of broadband access. It is by reason of the Ethernet technology progressively matures, Ethernet production has a highly standardization, the fiber's application lengthen the transmit distance, need not convert protocols; Ethernet has wide band and its technology has great upgrade potentials, suit the situation of China, etc. At the beginning of 2000, in many big cities of China, the community broadband network were constructed very fast. These broadband networks are mostly adopting Ethernet access mode. But there are some troubles in community broadband network's management, operation and maintenance, because have not any type switch can completely meet the needs of community broadband network.The special corridor switch that designed by our group can meet the community broadband network's need in a certain extent. It is a low cost and high performance switch = for the community broadband network's management, operation and maintenance.In this paper, firstly analyses the technology of Community Broadband Network and Ethernet, then expatiate the special corridor switcher's functions, hardware structure, software design and realization. In the course of special switch- ?design, the main research includes: administrable fast Ethernet switch-; hardware design, referring to SNMP, self-define the Community Network Management Protocol (CNMP), the switching chip's driver and application program interface realization, management software agent design, Systematic test.The special corridor switch*: is a Fast Ethernet switch ; the switching chip is AL216 that is connected to the management device through the 8051 SCM. The management device core is MPC860T. The management software agent is programmed by C language. The switch!' supports 10M/100M automatic negotiate, half-duplex and full-duplex mode operations, line switching, flow control, address learning, and port-based VLAN, etc. The network management functions are varied, such as monitoring and setting the basic information of the device, display and setting the port states, configure the port-based VLAN, supervise MAC address, remote software upgrading and so on. This special switch has run steadily for a long time on one famous broadband network.
