The 21st century is a global information era and the network technology has made giant strides. The conception of "Broadband" is more and more popular. The serve ,such as interconnections and video unicasting and VoIP, has a strong appeal to people. At present, thereare different modes of broadband interconnections----Ethernet mode,ADSL mode, and Cable Modem mode. There is great market drive of the Ethernet interconnection mode because: Internet is expending by leaps and bounds; IP QoS technology progressively matures; Ethernet has wide band and its technology has great upgrade potentials, etc. At the same time, when ISPs provide the serve of broadband interconnections to the user, there are some inevitable problems to solve, such as User Management, Business Management, Secure of Networking and Valuation Management, etc.Ethernet switch, at present, is the most chief interconnecting device. The high-function switch has been the backbone of the broadband Ethernet interconnection, when we use the switch to interconnect the network, we should solve the issue of remote management. In this paper, the author will inc^uire into the issue and research a workgroup and community level interconnection Ethernet switch. The main research includes:1. Hardware design of the manageable Ethernet switch.2. Referring to SI-IMP, self-define the Community Network Management Protocol (CNMP). Software design of AGENT.3. Systematic test. The switching chip is AL216 which is connected to the management device. The management device core is MPC860T. The software is programmed by C language. The switch supports lOBase-T,100Base-TX,half-duplex and full-duplex mode operations, line switching, flow control, address learning, and port -based VLAN, etc. The network management functions arevaried, such as Monitoring the basic information of the device, Reading or setting the port states, setting the ports open or shut, setting VLAN, Collecting MAC address, Software upgrading and so on.
