With the development of the technique of computer and microelectronics, a new measure instrument--Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG) comes into being. AWG based on Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) has a series of particular virtues, including the stable frequency of output, high quality waveform and wide modulation bandwidth, which is an important trend of study of AWG.DDS is an advanced technique on frequency synthesis, whose primary advantages are controlling facility, continuous phase and fine frequency resolution. This paper introduces in detail the composition, the working principle and the properties of DDS, and analyses the reason of DDS phase noise, and gives the method of reducing the noise.Realization of DDS depends on the digital device of high speed and high performance. High-speed, high-volume Programmable Logic Device is very suitable for realization of DDS with the support of powerful EDA software. In this paper, Altera EPF6OI6A is selected to realize DDS. The frame, specialty and using of EPF6O I 6A are discussed in detail.Finally, the author has researched and developed an AWG with the technique of DDS. The circuit framework, designing method and detailed software flow chart are given in this paper. The result of experimentation proves that this AWG has excelled traditional function generators and attained the desire of design. In the end of this paper, the prospect of the development of DDS and AWG is given.
