With the coming of the era of web as the major medium of information dissemination, more and more attention has been paid to the development of academic journals. To increase the speed and efficiency of the information transmission has been the most urgent task in this area. Traditional editorial-publication procedure can no longer fulfill the time and effectiveness demands to the journals. Academic journals have to revolute this publication model and decrease the time period for publication in order to better serve the knowledge renovations. Internet supplies both opportunities and challenges to the development of academic journals: computer and information technology makes lots of convenience to the publications, while it also brings intense international competitions when the readers distribute all over the world. Electronic academic journals give rise to a new direction of the development of publications. Currently laser disc based and web based electronic journals are the two most common types. The latter can be divided into two categories: one is the web version of the traditional journal; the other is the web-based electronic academic journal, or web academic journal. CAJ-CD ("Chinese Academic Journals (CD version)") is a typical CD-based academic journal, and the first large-scale, integrated academic journal database with full text searching function in China. The web version of academic journal is represented best by the Chinese Journal Web and Chinese Digital Journal Group. Chinese Journal Web was created as a web full-text database by taking the CAJ-CD full-text database as its core, and supplying topic literatures as its major service. Chinese Digital Journal Group has its individual publishers but supplies its contents as a whole on it website, and it is the first web publication union of Chinese scientific journals. There are few web academic journals, among which the "International Web Chemistry Journal" is the earliest. The arising and development of electronic academic journals such as CAJ-CD, Chinese Journal Web, Chinese Digital Journal Group, and "Chemical Journal on Internet" is the combined product of information technology and academic journal publication, and by comparison and analysis, plenty of inspiration and reference can be made to the proper model of the development of academic journals in this Internet era.First, new concepts were introduced to the whole procedure of academic journal publication with the arising of CD and web-based journals: academic publications include not only the printed copies, but also those stored in the electronic media; The academic papers supplied to the readers by web academic journals is accessed through computers, transmitted by the Internet, and compiled by the editorials; The publication of academic journals is regarded as the issue and transmission of the academic papers; The publishers include not only the traditional editorials and publishers of the journals, but also the electronic publishers who assembly and re-utilize the information in the journals; The concept of issue has also been changed from the simple issue of the journals to the gain of the copyright to the information in the journals.Second, the popularization and application of Internet technology has a revolutionary impact on the compiling and publication of the academic journals and gives a lot more and newer to the editorial work: Sufficient information supplies editorials with a good environment to make in-advance plans; The open and comprehensive information system makes editorials compile journals and update reviewer database in time and accurately; Editorials can accept papers and submit papers for reviewing by Internet communication tools; Editorials can also contact the authors conveniently by emails for decline or revision of the papers; The department of editorial and print plant can exchange data through the net for printing hard copies; More sale methods are made based on the Internet; More ways are made for readers' feedback.In addition, the CD version journ...
