Academic journal-an important part of modern academic mechanism-appeared and changed the traditional way of scholarly research, which was relatively closed off, provided an opportunity for scholars to timely publish and learn research results, and also built a fair platform for academic exchange and academic contention. Therefore, as an important carrier of disseminating academic results, academic journal is of critical significance in academic development. The period of the People's Republic of China was a critical period for the transformation from traditional academics to modern academics, and an important stage for the creation of modern academic system as well. And the key to promoting rapid academic development is the founding of journals and publishing communication. THE GWOSHYUE JIHKAN:A JOURNAL OF SINOLOGICAL STUDIES, THE YENCHING JOURNAL, THE TSING HUA JOURNAL and ACADEMIA SINICA BULLETIN of The National Research Institute of History and Philology, known as the "four academic journals of the Republic of China", became the role models among the academic journals at the time due to their relatively high academic reputation and social influence for timely introducing the academic advances at home and abroad, publishing high-level academic research results and cultivating academic masters who developed knowledge on both Chinese and Western learning and mastered modern and traditional academy. While they played an important role in promoting the modern transformation of traditional academy, they created their own value and made great contribution to the academic development of China. This thesis examines these four academic journals. The history of the development of the four journals from 1923 to 1949 are sorted out and described based on historical materials with such methods as literature research, comparative analysis, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. Their differences and similarities in terms of publishing subject and object in specific historical environment are compared, and the study also includes what role the four journals, as the representative of the highest academic level in the Republic of China, played in academic dissemination and how they affected the modern transition of traditional Chinese academy, based on which, the functions and significance of the four journals in the history of journals and academy are summarized to provide some enlightenment and practical lessons for modern academic journals in the new social transformation period. The thesis is divided into the following chapters:Chapter I, the founding process and basic introduction of the four journals are provided, respectively. It includes the founding of Chinese National Culture College of Peking University and the rules and regulations of THE GWOSHYUE JIHKAN:A JOURNAL OF SINOLOGICAL STUDIES, the founding of Harvard-Yenching Institute and its relationship with THE YENCHING JOURNAL, the resumption of THE TSING HUA JOURNAL, and the founding of Chinese Academy and of its historiography and linguistics institute and the creation of ACADEMIA SINICA BULLETIN of The National Research Institute of History and Philology.Chapter II, the relationship between the chief editor's academic thought and the tenets of the four journals are discussed. Meanwhile, the distribution and construction of the authors group of the four journals are analyzed and compared, using the number of articles published in the four journals, to discuss the co-existing academic relationship around the journals between editing and writing. This thesis holds that the chief editors of the four journals experienced the modern transition from academic horizon to knowledge structure and to the way of thinking that is different from traditional academy and culture; such transition guided the modern academic direction of publications. Besides the group of editors, THE GWOSHYUE JIHKAN:A JOURNAL OF SINOLOGICAL STUDIES mainly focused on established scholars in relevant academic fields at home and abroad; THE YENCHING JOURNAL was inclined to dig new scholars and cultivate young talents; THE TSING HUA JOURNAL mainly covered the group of authors originated from Tsinghua University; and ACADEMIA SINICA BULLETIN of The National Research Institute of History and Philology enriched its strength with top scholars in higher education institutions in early period, and took personnel from the historiography and linguistics institute as the authors. The different establishment ways of the academic community of the four journals exercised certain influence on the modern academic transition.Chapter III, around the editing tenets of the four academic journals, when the publications are placed in the context of modern academic discipline division, mainly with text interpretation, the respective academic content, difference and similarity of dissemination features and their influence on academic transition are compared and analyzed. The thesis holds that the articles of history occupied a large portion in the four journals. Besides, THE GWOSHYUE JIHKAN:A JOURNAL OF SINOLOGICAL STUDIES published a lot of articles about epigraphy and study of ancient utensils, THE YENCHING JOURNAL highlighted literature and arts, especially the study of drama, which covered many foundation work of this discipline; and THE TSING HUA JOURNAL were focused on papers in the field of social science, such as, sociology, political science, economics and science of law, which are of practical significance to improving the nation's economy and people's livelihood; the ACADEMIA SINICA BULLETIN became the main battle field for study of ethnology and anthropology in modern times based on new materials acquired from survey and experiment. The four journals had their preference in terms of disciplinary fields, but all the papers published attached importance to application of new materials, learned from study method of different disciplines, expanded new perspectives and focused on grasping and introducing academic advancement at home and abroad, and they explored a new realm for Chinese academics and played an active role in the modern transition of traditional academics.Chapter ?, the layout format and operating pattern of the four journals are discussed in a comparative way, and the development process of their editing and publishing standardization and specification is analyzed. The four journals show different features in layout details such as cover, page, illustration and index under the overall pattern that limits no text style, uses transverse format and new punctuations. Such reform of external form of journals, represent the transition of traditional academic journals itself. Meanwhile, the organization and arrangement of the four journals in every stage of the publishing, such as funding, printing, distribution and selling, also present the publications with the embryo of market-oriented publishing of modern journals.Chapter ?, the historical significance of the four journals in the history of academics and of journals is summarized, and also, their enlightenment and lessons for the publishing of modern academic journals are presented.
