This paper has designed an image processing system based on FPGA.This design used the high-performance devices Altera Stratix series FPGA as the core component, use the high literacy and large capacity DDR3 SDRAM as the external memory, used the Gigabit Ethernet as data transmission. System mainly includes image acquisition circuit, image data storage circuit, FPGA external circuit, Gigabit Ethernet data transmission interface circuit and PC components.The main parts of the system’s hardware include the FPGA external circuit design, CameraLink frame grabber circuit design, DDR3 and FLASH memory circuit design, Gigabit Ethernet interface circuit design. This paper also study and design the edge detection algorithm of Sobel operator based on Verilog language. This algorithm used to identify terrier of the tobacco. The implementation of algorithm main includes image data acquisition module, image data transmission and stored module, and Sobel operator calculation module. Finally, give a comprehensive software testing. Used the designed edge detection to detect the tobacco image acquisition, in testing adjust the threshold to detect the stems of tobacco. Experimental results show that this algorithm achieved the purpose of identifying stems.In addition, in order to ensure the stability of the system hardware, has studied the theory of SI and PI, and used Allegro PCB SI software to simulate DDR3 SDRAM’s key signals.And used the analysis results in PCB design. Part of the system power supply, used the Ansoft Siwave and Designer software to simulate the FPGA and DDR3’s switching noise SSN simulation, and simulate the system power’s resonance. Finally, used the simulation results to apply to the actual design of PCB.
