Populism is a hot topic in recent years, and its fuzziness increases related debate. Populism is "people-centered", and people are of supreme significance, accordingly populism grows popular day by day. However, people’s real role actually only exists in the slogan. In this study, it is found that "people" is just a fictitious advocated concept, and in fact only the masses themselves believe they belong to this group, preach populism value and participate in Populist Movement. Thus accordingly, in this study, the difference between "people" and "mass" will be explored, it will be discussed how the masses are gradually constructed as "people" in populist value system, and the masses’real state will be found with political factors removed. Then, the growing contemporary media is regarded as the environment foe the masses’ growth, it helps to shape the masses’ mode of thinking. In addition, this paper will further explore the effects of the media environment on the masses’growth, and the masses’ populist features on this platform. In part three, case study will focus on the masses’ contemporary populism; the masses’patterns of behavior in three types of populist movements will be discussed from three aspects, anti intellectual populism, civilian populism and national populism, and corresponding psychological causes will be analyzed. Finally, the masses’ contradiction in the pursuit of populism will be indicated: they are controlled by interest-focused groups despite of their desire to be independent, and they fall into the trap of totalitarian despite of their hope for independence. In this study, it is believed this contradiction is the typical feature of the masses involved into populism: the people who believe they enjoy boundless power are actually the masses at the lowest class, they grow up in seemingly convenient media environment, while they actually depend on the tool, they strive for independence and equality, while they actually fight against democracy.
