Under the Global background of rapidly developing fiber to the home(FTTH) inrecent years, GPON technology has been used by the major telecom operators worldwidefor the high transmission rate, the long transmission distance, robustness and high securityfeatures. In order to allow the user to continued to get more multimedia applications, thebetter network quality of service, the more stable rate on the Internet, in the future, theupgrading the GPON system are necessary, the systems include OLT and ONU. So it isvery important to develop a quick and convenient way to finish this task. At present,GPON ONU remote upgrade is relatively slow, which directly increase the cost ofengineering maintenance, indirectly influence the quality of surfing the Internet. Therefore,the research of remote upgrade mechanism for OLT and ONU in GPON system is of greatsignificance.Firstly, the importance of software version upgrade, and the necessity of this researchare analysed in this paper. Secondly, the principle and key technology of GPON system,and GEM encapsulation, ONT management control interface are introduced in detail.Thirdly, the existing GPON system OLT and ONU remote upgrade method and principleare expounded. Then, on the basis of theoretical and experimental research for traditionalGPON equipment upgrade mechanism, a new design of rapid upgrade GPON ONU areproposed. It means that multiple short OMCI message frames are mapped to a longermessage frame at layer two for transmission in the GPON OLT end, and through settingthe number of window to reduce the response time of ONU, thus to improve the upgradeefficiency. Finally, the feasibility of this design is proved through the theory and variousscenarios of experiment.This design suitable for manual and automatic upgrading of all the existing ONU type,which has a very good compatibility, theoretical and practical significance for theengineering application and development of GPON technology.
