"Picture Daily " is one of the earliest such kind of newspaper in modern Chinese history. It is rich in content and illustrating pictures and easy to understand. In social life, there had been a series of new changes, and the characteristics of mixed Chinese and Western show had been highlighted. As for clothing, some new clothing styles gradually began to spread, through continuous improvement and absorption from foreign styles, Chinese clothing fashion showed the trend of increasing diversity. Some of these new clothing styles came from the oceanic, the others from different parts of China. Diet, on the one hand, the traditional Chinese street vendors would continue to peddle the past way of selling a variety of Chinese specialties; on the other hand, Ningbo Restaurant, Yangzhou Restaurant, Jinling Restaurant, Hui Restaurant, the Local cuisine and many other Western-style cuisine were becoming booming. Leisure and entertainment seemed to be diverse, and the people in late Qing dynasty could enjoy increasingly diversified leisure and entertainment. Except brothels, opium dens and gambling places, tea house, play park, restaurants, gardens and other leisure and entertainment places were increasingly opened. Besides Traditional Chinese large-scale public entertainment activities, western entertainment was introduced into China, including horse racing, circuses which were popular among common people and were also welcomed by Chinese people. Weddings and funerals, the call of reform of marriage and funeral customs of the old was growing and some insight people had already begun to put it into practice. Although the old customs were still existing, it had to undergo certain changes when time changed. Some of them became more and more luxury. All these features could be generalized as"co-existence of Chinese and Western, old and new smells'. With changes in social life, the values of the late Qing people had also changed. On the one hand, traditional values and the pressure of old customs were still detaining the peoples thinking and constraining on peoples behavior; on the other, Western ideas and values of modern culture gradually transferred Into China, which challenged the old Chinese tradition. Outstandingly in the social climate, the existing drug charges, prostitution, banditry and other ills of society followed the old, but money worship, Western Worship and women emergence in society were becoming popular which was traded as new social trends. As for social control, modern Chinese police (also known as the policeman) played and important role in the maintenance of basic social order and social security management.
