The paper is on the current status of junior middle school students to identify role models in Chinese teaching materials by means of empirical investigation. The researchers used PEP Chinese teaching materials as an example, the first from the identity, characters and values were discussed in this paper and the analysis of overall situation of model characters in the textbooks, and then understood the basic situation of role models of junior middle school students by empirical investigation. Through comparative analysis found that role models of junior middle school students’ mind and teaching materials the same lies in: character types and areas of the diversified features, and moral qualities of their common features; the difference is that:role models of textbooks mainly reflect the ruling class of the core values of historical figure, and role models of students’ mind is the entertainment stars as the main characters, life, emphasis on personal values. The survey found that students only showed "partly approved" on role models of textbooks, namely was unable to accept and agree to all, even resented to some figures. Because students thought role models of textbooks were too perfect, far away from their own lives, they were not familiar with their deeds. Film and television stars, sport starts, parents, teachers and classmates as close to their lives, and they became the first role models to students.This paper further explored the complex factors of students identified role models of textbooks. Since junior middle school students are developing of physical and mental. Their consciousness is rapidly development, emotion rich but not strong. They prone to some misunderstandings in the selection and identify the role models. Coupled with the current example education exist "alienation" tendencies, such as rigid selection criteria, the way of education do not consider student’ characteristics, simple machinery. That leads to students not identity role models. In addition, students are very easy to be the youth subculture of deviated the mainstream value of the society. While the mass media plays a strong role in promoting youth idol worship culture development. All these make that teenagers show some rebellious character to school education and affects their identity on the textbooks.Finally, the researcher thinks that although model education has some problems, but to explore the positive model education has the vital significance to the comprehensive development of middle school students. The model education should consider that the students’ physical and mental development, the youth subculture as media, change the idea of traditional model education. We can select suitable teaching materials and effective way of teaching to help students establish a correct outlook on life and values.
