Liu zongyuan's Sao Ti works show the high artistic achievements. However, scholars rarely conduct specific researches about them in recent years. This situation is related to the different definitions of Sao Ti. Consequently, there are some difficulties in defining Liu zongyuan's Sao Ti works due to the vagueness of the concept of Sao Ti. It is necessary to use the previous research results.Chao buzhi is the first researcher who investigates Chuci in depth and compiles Sao Ti works extensively. Xu Chuci and Bian Lisao, the Chao's two collections of Sao Ti works were lost for a long time. Nevertheless, Liu zongyuan's Sao Ti works in these two collections could be reduced according to Zhu xi's Commentary to Chuci and some important notes of different editions of Liu zongyuan's collected works. Thereupon they are viewed as the first classification of Liu zongyuan's Sao Ti work. The second classification is the other works under the table of Sao of Liu zongyuan's collected works. The third classification is the works which are in direct and obvious relation to Chuci or the first classification and which are formed mainly by"Xi-sentence"."Xi-sentence"is argued as the necessary and sufficient condition of Sao Ti works by some researchers. However, this kind of argument faces some problems in the concrete operation. It is reasonable to consider"Xi-sentence"as the sufficient and unnecessary condition of Sao Ti works.Including the common features of Sao Ti, there are some other unique characteristics in Liu zongyuan's Sao Ti works, such as short and compact length, vivid and vigorous material, various forms and styles, etc. Furthermore, there are some close relationships between Chuci and Liu zongyuan's Sao Ti works. The latter imitates the former in language, especially in using word and making sentence. The latter also develops the former in the aspect of BiXin with the combination of fables. In the form of sentence, Liu zongyuan's Sao Ti works not only inherits Chuci in using the common sentences, but also makes some innovations in combing Sao and prose and in using 7-word sentence. In a word, Liu zongyuan's Sao Ti works make one important part of his literary achievements; he is not only the best inheritor and innovator of Chuci, but also the flag of Sao Ti literature in Tang dynasty.
