There have been various researches on the Imperial Examination System of the Tang Dynasty. However, most of these researches were focused on topics like the origin, the development, the evaluation of the Imperial Examination System itself as well as its influence on the politics, economy and culture of the Tang Dynasty. Meanwhile, there have been very few studies on the Scholars, the participants of the Imperial Examination, and the then prevailing custom among the intellectuals. Scholars were among the most important social groups on which the influence of the Imperial Examination System was very well demonstrated. Talking the intellectuals asits subject , this thesis endeavors to study the living situation, the value and theideology in a systematic way. The article introduces in the followling three points:the Tang Dynasty scholars' social environment, the examination lives,and their habits formed under the Imperial Examination System:The implementation of the Tang Dynasty imperial examination system, can embody the publicity and equality of the exam. It provided more opportunities for the Scholars in the lower and middle rank to enter politics. As protecting the feudal rules,and their social status were improved relatively. It had made a certain progress. However,for the scholars' survival and ideology, the Imperial Examination brought them more negative aspects. It not only increased the pressure of their survival, but also changed their values. With the development of the Imperial Examination on Tang Dynasty, the society attached more importance to it,and the social atmosphere changed. The concept "Only the Imperial Examination is most important" had been deeply rooted in people'mind, making most scholars thought whether passed the examination was the most important. Their pursuit of political ideals and the value on life had changed,their independence weakened relatively, creativity reduced greatly and personality shrinked gradually. The wind among the intellectuals taked on a downward look. They were embadied as follows:Asking reputed persons to recommend for passing the exams;making different parties in officialdom;showy literature ethos;luxury and profligate lives,and so on. In short, the impact of Tang Dynasty Imperial Examination System over scholars is quite big. The study on the social life, the custom and etiquette among the intellectuals can not only reveal the true picture of the intellectuals under the Imperial Examination System but can also cast some light on the custom and social manners of the society as a whole. Moreover, this can also serve as a useful supplement to the study of the Imperial Examination System.
