| The Scholars, written by Wu Jingzi, is a long famous novel with the definite features of" Zhang Hui". As the peak work in Chinese satire history, thousands of monograph and papers on it excelling after another have been published ever since. However, among all of them, mostly was writing about the art of satire, leaving the study on the Imperial Examination System on a surface level. This paper focuses on The Scholars as well, and starts from the historical background of the Imperial Examination System in the feudal society, systematically analyzes the spiritual and the living status of the scholars, and interprets the significance of the Imperial Examination System this paper mainly includes the following four parts:Part1.Introduction:to make a brief review of the contemporary studies on The Scholars and point out the value of a deep study on it.Part2.With a description on the Imperial Examination System shown in the novel, this paper combines the social status in the Qing dynasty, analyzes the dramatic contrast in the life before and after the scholar passed the Imperial Examination, aiming to disclose the significance of the Imperial Examination System.Part3.Besides the great influence of the imperial system on the scholars in this novel, the authors also tries to describe the spirits and the " magnificent feat" of the pedantry scholars and the real or the false scholars, and points out directions to a new life for the scholars to either be a hermits with no way to pass the exam or give up Confucianism and engage in business.Part4.After a reflection on the gain and loss of the Imperial Examination as well as its strong effects on the scholars destiny, this paper, through a thorough comparison of all the Exams systems before and after the Imperial Examination, reveals the influence of the Imperial examination on the society, status, pursuit as well as the value of life of the scholars in the federal society.Conclusion:to begin from the influence of the Imperial examination on every aspects of society, we are required to learn to know and have knowledge of the Imperial Examination from different perspectives. |
