The more we observe art, the more mysteries we face. Just as other fields are taking steps to understanding, the arts are continually being discovered. As there are many definitions of the arts, artists must be very careful in defining and expressing the principles of arts as to not distort its meanings. Therefore, artists must strive to gain understanding and knowledge of them. This study is to summarize and re-define art spirits of two great artists: Shi-tao (石涛) and Wassily Kandinsky. Shi-tao (17th Century, China) struggled to pursue a realization and the essence of art so as to define himself and draw out the perfectionism and real truth from himself and his art. In the same line of Shi-tao, Wassily Kandisky (20th Century, Russia) also struggled to have an inner drive through a perfect inner freedom. From the eyes of two artists who could enjoy spiritual affluence regardless of period and circumstance, this study is intended to provide me with theoretical and spiritual bases on which I can narrow down my separate thoughts and which will eventually help me to conduct more creative arts.
