This essay systemically studies Frequency Adverbs from the aspects of Semantics and Syntax, based on the theory of three planes and benefited from some theories of Systemic & functional Grammar and the inter-language theory. Then it investigates the situation that foreign students use those Frequency Adverbs, does error analysis about Frequency Adverbs, and gives guidance to the second language teaching of Chinese.First, this essay ascertains the character and range of Frequency Adverbs based on two respects of sentence Syntax and Semantics, according to the forefathers' research.Secondly, it introduces category of modality from Systemic & functional Grammar. As Frequency Adverbs in English have semantic levels from negative to positive, it divides Chinese Frequency Adverbs into 4 levels: "lowest level, lower level, higher level, and highest level" on the semantic standard cooperated with form standard.Thirdly, on basis of analysis about the language material, it studies the Frequency Adverbs from 3 aspects: the relationship with time, the character of amount, the choice of negative or positive.Finally, it compares the situation that foreign students use those Frequency Adverbs with the situation that Frequency Adverbs appears in Chinese material; Then it analyzes the 4 error categories: "missing, mis-adding, mis-order, and misuse of adverbs", and studies the acquisition of Frequency Adverbs of the first and second level; At last it reviews the grammatical settings about Frequency Adverbs in teaching outline and the HSK outline.
