| Objective Knee Osteoarthritis, a common chronic disease that jeopardize the old people, manifests as the degeneration of joint cartilage and the secondary Osteohyperplasia caused by mechanical or biological facts. Because of the complicate pathological process and many unclear elements, the medical therapy of NSAIDS application, to inhibit the anabolism of the antiphlogistic Prostate-in, represents a rapid but unabiding effect with lots of side effects. When medicine dose not work, surgical therapy usually is applied with a considerable expense, great pain and not so perfect curative effect. Knee Osteoarthritis belongs to "Bi" category in TCM, which considers the disease as a result of both inner reasons and outer reasons including the weakness of Liver & Kidney, years of fatigue and the evil of Wind, Cold and Dampness. Current therapies include Herb, Acupuncture and Warm acupuncture, but simple Moxibustion has seldom been reported. <> says: Moxi cures all illness. Moxa, as the material of the Moxi, has the effect of recuperating the yang, expelling cold, regulating energy, dredging meridian, drawing out the pus and expelling the Heat-evil, and has been an important method of recovery in TCM. We applied monkshood-cake mild moxibustion on points of Zusanli and Xiyan, observing the curative effect and the rate of relapse, in order to find a safe and effective way for KOA.Method All the 62 cases, came from the out-patients visited the Rheumatism Department and Acupuncture Department from Jan. 2005 to Jun. 2006, were randomly . distributed into cure group and control group. Monkshood-cake mild moxibustion was applied to cure group and Xianligubao Capsule to control group. Statistical analyse was made after four weeks, and by that time 1 case was lost in each group respectively, so totally 60 cases were taken up. We selected VAS, ISOA and the starting time of treatment to evaluate the curative effect. Records were made when 0, 4 weeks, and 100% of the patients had feedback visits after 2 months. Result Both group had evident pain relief after four weeks of treatment (P＜0.01) and the cure group was super to the control group (P＜0.05). The ISOA of both group were obviously improved (P＜0.01) and the cure group was super to the control group (P＜0.05) again. In cure group the cure rate was 80.0% and effective rate was 93.3% while in control group was 53.3% and 76.6%. The comparison result of the cure rate was P＜0.05, which indicated the cure effect of the cure group is better. The comparison of the relapse rate after 2 months was P＜0.01, which indicted a more persistent effect in the cure group.Conclusion Monkshood-ckke mild moxibustion can markedly improve the flexibility of knees and the function of up or down stairs, that because of the powerful analgetic effect of Moxi, which regulates the whole body to get a faster and more persistent effect with lower relapse rate. The method is as easy and simple as for patient to do it at home to reduce financial cost and insist on the therapy. |
