| BackgroundSudden Deafness is a frequent disease that can seriously decrease life quality of the patients. The pathogenesis of Sudden Deafness has not been clearly elucidated. The hypothesis of western medicine involved viral infection, microthrombotic vascular origin, inflammation process, etc. While in the Chinese traditional medicine, sudden deafness is considered to be the result of occlusion of channel and collaterals. Currently, the therapeutic researches in the patients with Sudden Deafness showed that the therapeutic effects were varied. After 2 weeks from onset, the effective rate decreased gradually. In our department the experienced doctors get obvious therapeutic effect using acupuncture to treat this disease. So the purpose of this study is to search for an effective and economical therapy for sudden deafness with a longer duration.ObjectiveTo investigate and evaluate the clinical therapeutic effects of different acupuncture-therapies on sudden deafness.MethodsThe study was a randomized, case-controlled trial. The patients with sudden deafness were divided randomly into two groups: the treatment group and the control group. The duration of all the patients was more than 2 weeks. They were all treated by acupuncture on acupoints Ermen (SJ 21) Tinggong (SI 19) Tinghui (GB 2) etc. The former acupuncture deeply while the later acupuncture shallowly. Each case was treated for 4 weeks. The hearing level (dB HL) measured by Electro-audiometer would be evaluated and compared before treatment and after treating for 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 1 month after the period of treatment. And the symptoms were evaluated at the same time.ResultsAll the cases with sudden deafness were recruited by the acupuncture department of Guanganmen hospital.
