1The objective and significance of the research1.1Objective:To discuss and evaluate the clinical effectiveness of acupuncture as auxiliary treatment of sudden deafness when the high-dose steroid pulse therapy doesn’t work well.1.2Significance:Sudden deafness is a kind of a common disease in otolaryngology which not only seriously impacts the quality of patients’daily life, but also cause mental depression, fear, anxiety and other psychological disorders. Clinical treatments always receive various results, especially for patients who are not cured after high-dose steroid pulse therapy, the effectiveness will become even worse. Dissatisfied with western medicine treatment, many patients will turn to the acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture treatment for sudden deafness has a history about thousands of years in China. In recent years, some research have discovered that acupuncture can effectively change the parameters of hemorheology, stimulate the muscles to regulate vascular system and improve microcirculation, enhance nerve conduction in the inner ear, adjust immunity and release patients’ mental pressure. Therefore, we should combine western medical therapy with acupuncture adjuvant therapy to treat the patients who did not have good response to the high-doses hormone treatment. We are in the hope of finding a comprehensive method which is both economy and effective to improve the life quality of patients with sudden deafness.2Research MethodsIn this experiment, the research object is inpatients in the Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Gansu Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The SAS (Self-Rating Anxiety Scale) and SDS (Self-Rating Depression Scale) are used to assess the patients when they are admitted and approved to leave. During the treating process, we adopt the high-dose steroid pulse therapy for the first five days and then conduct a hearing test in the sixth day. The patients whose pure tone (250-4000Hz) average increase less than15dB will be divided into the acupuncture group and the conventional therapy group. For conventional therapy group, the original treatment will be kept the same while for the acupuncture group, acupuncture will be added into the former treatment as a complementary therapy. The total period of treatment in both groups lasts14days. At the end of treatment, we will employ statistical method to evaluate the two groups separately on the basis of the data collected from SAS and SDS. The level of hearing improvement will be calculated based on the audiometry results before and after the treatment which are evaluated according to the effectiveness grading standards of Chinese Medical Association Otorhinolaryngology Science Institute (2006). The amelioration of patients’tinnitus and vertigo situation is assessed by reference to The Guiding Principles of TCM New Drug Clinical Research (2002).3ResultsThe overall effective ratios of acupuncture group and the conventional therapy group were74.4%and52.5%, which showed statistically significant difference. Both treatments were proved to be helpful in vertigo and tinnitus amelioration without significant difference. Additionally, both group achieved big success in dealing with patients who felt anxious and depressed and presented enormous statistical differences after hospitalization.4ConclusionCombined with acupuncture treatment, the comprehensive therapy was exactly proved to be effective and showed statistical difference when compared to the conventional group. With the functions of improving the mental condition of patients and enhancing the effectiveness, it is a therapy which should be promoted in clinical treatment.
