Development of information field and the explosive growth of data traffic dramatically require the high capacity and intelligent functionality of the transport network. Automatically Switched Optical Network(ASON) provides dynamicaly connection management, excellent network protection and restoration performance, and multiple value-added service provision. Naturally, ASON is the future of the next generation optical transport network.The realization of control plane is the critical issue of ASON technology. Among lots of control plane technical drafts, GMPLS protocols are the most mature and integrated one. It include link management protocol, routing protocol, and signaling protocols. The purpose of design of GMPLS protocol is realizing the excellent communication between different kinds of network equipment, distributed control, and eventually enhancing the intelligence of network and traffic fusion on IP basis. However, there are still some pendent problems while cooperating with GMPLS protocol in ASON control plane. For example, how to realize control functionality of ASON with GMPLS protocol? How does LMP support the characteristic that control plane is separated from data plane? How does signaling protocol recover the network fault? With the support of some optical network project, the author has investigated ASON control plane and GMPLS protocol systematically and detailedly, and especially focused on signaling protocol.In the course of graduate study, the author and her companions take up with the research and realization of ASON control plane. The paper analyses the ASON control plane and proposes realization plan of GMPLS control platform. Its main contribution are as following:1. Designed and developed the GMPLS control platform of ASON network based on Linux OS. The experimental system is the fruit of the whole research team, and its functions include auto-discovering neighbors, managing link resource, calculating route and wavelength, distributing link state advertisement, setuping and managing connections. The system realizes the main functions of ASON control plane defined in ITU-T G.8080. I joined in the research work and co-designed the GMPLS system, and co-developed and co-tested GMPLS protocol software.2. Proposed an extended scheme applied in fast protection and restoration of Mesh optical network based on GMPLS signaling, and analysed the performance of the new scheme. GMPLS RSVP-TE, signaling protocol, has extended new objects and mechanism for optical network. But it does not define mature scenario for handling protection and restoration. The author extended GMPLS RSVP-TE by adding new association object for protection and restoration, and publish a paper on this idea.
