Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON) is a new generation optical network which users send requirements and the signaling network controls and achieves a series of functions including creation, tear-down, switching, transporting of link and so on in optical transport network. It is derived from optical layer network of the transport network. We devote ourselves to developing the optical network with high potentiality to be an intelligent network with highly independently coping with services needed, economic valid and providing end-to-end services for the whole network directly in optical layer.Software is the kernel of ASON. It is the most prominent feature of introducing independent intelligent control plane to the transport network, and makes use of control plane to achieve routing automatic discovery, call connection management and protect and recovery and so on in order to achieve dynamic call connection management in the network.This dissertation mainly introduces the basic theory, the key technology and innovative research of ASON network, such as the difference among the ASON standards, plane demarcation, structural elements, application models, signaling protocol and extension to it to meet ASON requirements, realization of UNI interface on ASON reference point and testing of ASON control plane.In the 1st chapter, we firstly simply introduce the research background, significance, services supported, the standardized orgnizations and process of ASON, and summarize the differences among these standard orgnizations.In the 2nd chapter, we introduce basic theories of ASON including architecture and plane demarcation of it and emphasize on structural elements, interfaces and implement mechanism of the ASON control plane and the functions implemented mostly. At the same time, we introduce the type of ASON application models and signaling protocols to support control plane.In the 3rd chapter, we introduce GMPLS signaling protocol, mostly including RSVP and CR-LDP. By comparing these two signaling protocols, we find many advantages and disadvantages of them. Based on the current development condition of the signaling protocol and the standards adopted and recommended in our contry, RSVP was selected as the only signaling protocol in our ASON control plane, so we focus on the research of RSVP signaling protocol and extensions of it.In the 4th and 5th chapters, we meet the requirements of ASON by the extensions to RSVP from RSVP-TE to GMPLS RSVP-TE step by step. We detailedly present the theory, background and current condition of RSVP protocol. We focus on the messages, objects, running mechanism and the application in ASON control plane and a series of extensions for ASONdemands.In the 6th chapter, we study the extensions and application of GMPLS RSVP-TE in UNI interface further. By using our designed ASON software, we detailedly explain GMPLS interfaces and the procedure of messages in the connection creation and deletion process on UNI reference points.In the 7th chapter, we design and build the environment of testing the fuctions of the signaling protocol in the ASON control plane by devices we have, fuctions implemented in ASON control plane and the testing standards about ASON. At the same time, we provide some ways, steps and scenes of testing the function of the signaling protocol to meet requirements of the ASON control plane and interoperability testing.In the end, all of the works in this dissertation are summed up, and their futures are prospected.
