With the rapid development of information technology and network technology, embedded systems become widely used in many fields such as scientific research, military technology, engineering, and consumer electronics and so on. The research of embedded systems covers all aspects of computer science.The present research investigated the structure of working principle of FPGA and analyzed the feasibility and advantage of FPGA as the embedded system hardware platform based on the characteristics of FPGA. By using the Virtex-ⅡPro development board from Xilinx company, the study introduced the hardware resource on the board and analyzed the MicroBlaze soft-core and the PowerPC 405 hard-core microprocessor embedded in the chip of FPGA.Based on the knowledge of resources on Virtex-ⅡPro development board, the study designed embedded systems with MicroBlaze soft-core and the PowerPC 405 hard core. This research succeed in transplanting uCLinux operating system to MicroBlaze soft-core processors, including setting of the hardware and software environment, generation of cross-compiler tool and cut, translation, and compilation of the kernel. The embedded music game application was then implemented in the transplanted operating system. The face detection system was designed in the PowerPC 405 hard core processor, including analysis of face detection process, building of hardware development platform, transplantation of the source code of face detection system based on AdaBoost Algorithm provided by OpenCV, compilation, translation and debugging and so on.This study explored general steps of the development of embedded systems based on FPGA development platform and provided methods and steps of the application of FPGA hardware-based embedded system through the design of embedded music game and the face detection system. This research contributes to the application of embedded systems.
