With the rapid development of semiconductor technology, logic resources in FPGA have reached millions orders of magnitude, which make system-on-chip (SOC) based on FPGA has become possible. The design of SOC based on FPGA has many advantages, such as a short development cycle, low-cost, software and hardware in-system programmable, system design flexibility and can be trimmed, scalable, upgradeable, etc, Because of these, it has became a hot spot of research of electrical system design. On the other hand, with the development of embedded Linux systems and digital image processing technology, face-detect technology has been implemented on the platform with embedded linux operating system. So the development of SOC on FPGA and the implementation of image processing based on embedded linux have practical application value. In this thesis, we have implemented a SOC design based on PowerPC405 and developed a face-detect system on embedded linux. The main work of this thesis includes:(1) Introduce the SOC design methodology on FPGA, Constructon of SOC system with PowerPC processor as a core and IP Core as peripheral devices based on FPGA.(2) Design a software platform of the SOC and porting of embedded linux operating system. The main works of porting include building of cross-compile environment, development of BSP, reduction of kernel, setting up of root file system and implementation of bootloader.(3) Implementation of face-detect function on SOC system. Improve the speed of face detection throngh the software optimization.
