With the rapid growth of the Information technology, the research areas of geographic information science are increasingly broaden and the depth is increasing, which promotes the informatization of resources and environment science. However, the complexity and variety of resources and environmental models equally needs abundant model computation resources and unified store and communications of spatial data,the integration of data, representation etc.In the paper, we make some introduction and discussion about model and model base management system, as well as resources and environmental models, and we make analysis and comparison on their system architecture and working principle.In addition, we analyze the key technologies of modeling framework from these aspects: model building, model compound and model computation. These are the basis of the in-depth study.In the paper, we make further research on design of resource and environmental modeling framework. And we implement the workflow-based resource and environmental modeling framework. Finally, we applied the framework to grassland ecosystem food provisioning model validates the feasibility and efficiency of the modeling software. The main works and conclusions are as follows:(1) We discuss the representation, building and management of model. In addition, we design the XML-based representation and reuse methods of resources and environmental models, adopting object-oriented design methods to implement abstract representation of models. Moreover, we extend it with Workflow.(2) We give the MathML-based model formula parsing methods, which dynamically builds model instances by parsing the semantic of mathematical markup language. This method is more flexible, practical and expansible than traditional method, which abstracts resources and environmental models to model classes and model instances. In addition, this method is no need to programming and design according to the characteristics of various models.(3) We give the formalized definition description of model compound integration pattern, This definition represents the simple sub-model as a symbol, the sub-model sequence as a string, and gives the related operation definitions, which lays the foundation the optimization theory of model compound sequence.(4) We design the components-based structure of the modeling environment, which is propitious to the function integration of software and other systems or modules. In addition, we integrated it with many data pretreatment modules and post-processing modules.
