Ship information management system (SIMS) based on satellite technique used onboard ocean-going ships has already been popular, however, SIMS equipped on river-going ships has a long way to go, considering the economy reason. Comparing with the DataChief C20 engine room supervision and alarm system developed by Norway Kongsberg Marine Ltd., researching the GPRS topology carefully, we bring forward a comparatively cheap system based on the wireless GPRS communication. According to the new structure, a supervision system was setup used on inland-waterway ship, monitoring the exhaust gas temperature of each cylinder of the main engine.During the designing of supervision system, it is found that all the systems are structured on the basis of one kind of module called DTU. After systematically studying the embedded technology, data transceiver knowledge using TCP/IP protocol, we put forward a design project of the DTU module and realize its basic function from hardware and software. The whole dissertation can be divided into three parts:The first part contains chapter 1 and chapter 2, which mainly describes the history and actual state of the engine room monitoring system, application of the fieldbus technology in the ship automation, and the importance of the IPMS (integrated platform management system) used in the ship management. The introduction of the DCC20 system especially lays stress on the conception of ship information and different communication network fusion. The second part includes chapter 3 and chapter 4, in which the advantages and topology of the freshwater ship monitoring system based on GPRS, hardware design of the GPRS terminal and monitoring software developed with VB6.0 are introduced. Besides, the experiment carried on a 4135 diesel engine proves the practicability of the monitoring system based on GPRS mentioned above. The scheme and critical technology used in DTU module design are introduced in part 3, which is consisted of chapter 5,6 and 7 after the summary of part 1 and 2. Besides, the hardware and software design scheme of the DTU module are given. The critical technology includes μC/OS—II, TCP/IP, HTTP and so on. At last, the basic function of DTU module, including short message alarm, embedded dynamic web server and wireless communication based on TCP is realized. The experiment of each function has been finished. All the research above can help us to develop the IPMS used on the inland-waterway ship. The future of ship automation is the fusion of cruising on board ship and ship management ashore, which can smooth the chain of information, logistics and funds of the ship industry. IPMS will play an important role in this process.
