Accompanied with the higher education's popularization, the speed of constructions in colleges and universities becomes more and more faster. It only takes no more than one or two years for some constructions in campus from design to erection. It can be concluded that the constructions in colleges and universities have stepped into a new phase. Many new colleges and universities have an integrated planning on their campus, centralizing all or part of functions in campus into one large building, which is not designed with rooms based on the divisions of various departments, but devised to several kinds of all-purpose rooms in relate to architectural functions. The uses of rooms in this building will be arranged according to the particular needs of different departments, which makes a flowing process for the users. The writer calls the building megastructure in colleges and universities. However, the study on this structure is rare in the architectural research all over the country and till now it is nearly impossible to find research materials that collect and sum up systematically all the megastructures in colleges and universities in China. This article will try to fill up this vacancy.By a lot of field studying on megastructures in colleges and universities and collecting and summing up particularly the related research information domestically and overseas, this research summarizes the characteristics of the mega structure: mega axis, not setting rooms by departments, high density with low stories, modulus and all-purpose characters of each mega structure cell. The origin of mega structure and causes of appearances will be analyzed particularly from education, cities and architecture.
