From the angle of sociology, the thesis probes into the Wasan Schools in Edo period, discusses their emergence background and dissertates their dedication to the development of Wasan and popularization of mathematics. The whole thesis consists of five parts.In the first part, the paper analyses the social background of Wasan Schools' emergence and the social origin of their mathematicians. It is supposed that Wasan had developed in the form of Geibao. Like other Geibaos in Edo period, Wasan adopted the Iemoto-allowing system in its teaching process, and formed academic competing system.In its second part, the paper briefly introduces the state of each Wasan School in Edo period, including the site of the school, their maths content and the relationship between masters and apprentices.Thirdly, during Wasan development, Algebra and infinitesimal algorithm are the most prominent achievements, some of which has approached the level of western modern mathematics. Different Wasan schools studied these two aspects to different degrees, and this thesis compares their studies around these two aspects. In addition, it discusses the academic interaction between different schools.Fourthly, taking Hasegawa Hiroshi School for example, this paper dissertates the dedication of Wasan schools to the development of Wasan and popularization of mathematics in Edo period.The thesis draws conclusion in its final part, commenting on the characteristics and historical role of Wasan School from a sociological view of mathematic schools.
