As the foundation stone of development of a nation, innovation is also the impetus of a company's sustainable development.Auto industry, which is a model representative of mechanical manufacturing industry, is a highly capital concentrated and technology driven industry. As one of the primary industry to speed up development during industrial restructuring in the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, auto industry expresses the independent innovation capability of Chinese enterprises in the best way.The rapid growth in auto industry in recent years has made China a major auto producer across the world. On the other hand, the strategy of "make technology by market " is not effective. Low-level independent innovation capability, lack of core technology and independent intellectual property products, are the bottleneck for Chinese auto industry to become a strong competitor in the international markets. Practice tests clearly that those core technologies can only be made by independent innovation.As a key listed company of FAW, Y Company shoulders the responsibility of independent innovation, as well as the mission to develop self-owned brand of FAW. It is demonstrated in FAW's long-term strategic planning that till 2012 self-owned brand products will be about one million, among which one third comes from Y Company. Thus what measures Y Company should take to improve its independent innovation capability and develop self-owned brand products has become an important subject for the company to solve in the new development era.In the thesis, by analyzing the current independent innovation condition, existing problems and develop tendency of Chinese auto industry, the author points out the necessity of following an independent innovation way for Chinese enterprises. And by analyzing the current independent innovation condition and existing problems in the development of Y Company, the thesis also suggests independent innovation strategies for Y Company including technical innovation, management innovation, product innovation and marketing innovation.
