Risk management is an important aspect in the whole process of project management. With fast development of China's modernization construction and national economy, the number of construction projects is increasing quickly. Expansion of investment scale, more length of construction period, increase of technological requirements, more project stakeholders, and other facts, make risk of project success increase day and day. Lost control of project implementation is becoming severe. As an integrated social activity involved economy, technology, management and organization, construction project is full of uncertainty in all these aspects. Construction project needs to strengthen risk management urgently. Risk management has become one of the hottest research topics for modern construction project management.With fast development of computer and IT technology, utilizing IT technology to assist management has become common sense. However, how to combine perfect theory, rich management practice and computer software, how to utilize advanced computer technology to realize management goals are urgent requirements for many risk managers. They are also concerned problems for many software developers. Based on the theory of risk management, combined with the author's practical work in specific projects, giving an example of application of PowerPIP of Shanghai Power Shanghai Power Science & Technology Co. Ltd, this paper researches and analyzes utilizing IT methods to assist risk management.It introduces research background of risk management and its development trend in domestic and abroad briefly and analyzes and concludes the current status of risk management in China.It describes basic definition, attribute, character and category of risk and mainly analyzes character of risk management for construction project and the necessity and urgency for risk management.It puts forward the idea of total risk management through the analysis of whole risk management process, and describes the total process management theory of risk identification, risk estimating, risk assessment, risk coping and risk controlling.It describes design idea and management process of risk management software system through introducing PowerPIP risk management model in detail.It analyzes the whole process of utilizing IT methods to assist risk management systemicly and describes management requirements analysis, assistant IT realization methods and final risk management outcome through giving an example of practical application of PowerPIP risk management model in Shenhua oil project.
