The new concept of "supermarket service design" was proposed for the first time in this paper theoretically by combining product design with service study. The paper approached new information technologies and their applications in the "supermarket service design". The study of new information technologies and their applications in design would be of significance in changing consumption patterns, enhancing customers'experience, creating new formats, building a new service system.This paper starts from the history of service design and supermarket development. A new concept of "supermarket service design"was proposed, and the objects and contents of the supermarket service design were described in the paper. Based on the analysis of traditional information technology and its application in supermarkets, the study introduced several new information technologies such as the technology of internet of materials as a representative, outlined the characteristics of these new information technologies, working principles and the inspiration for service design, pointed out that these core information technologies would bring revolutionary leap for the supermarket service, and facilitate the supermarket service design as well. And then the study summed up several service design principles and methods through the analysis of purchase behaviors and psychological needs of consumers, and illustrated the applications of these principles and methods. Finally, this study constructed a new framework of the supermarket service system by using these new information technologies, proposed an idea of "three service systems", i.e self-service shopping system, fast clearing system, and intelligent management system. The technical background, the basic building blocks, the services projects provided, the service processes, and the links between supermarkets and customers were described in details. At the same time the new service system under the framework and traditional supermarket service systems were compared. The advantages of the new service system were summed up. Finally on the basis of the theory study, a supermarket shopping card service system was designed after the investigation of some typical supermarkets in Wuxi in order to provide a practical example for the supermarket system proposed in this paper.It was concluded that the supermarket model of service activities is the intergration of information technology and design. Information technology is a platform for the design, development of information technology provides the qulification for supermarket services design and development, update of information technology provide a wider space for supermarket services system design. Through advanced services design under the context of new information technology could provide added value, enable customers to obtain sensory appeal, promote consumers'purchase decisions and has played a leading role in the process of consumption.Design service for Supermarket would create a pleasant shopping experience for consumers, speed up the shopping process, improve service efficiency, innovate management system, and produce good social and economic benefits.
