The traditional earrings of Uygur ethnic group in Xinjiang, with their long history, unique spirituality, and intense Uygur ethnic group characteristics, have been researched by archaeologists, anthropologists, ethnologists, and estheticians concerned these years. However, the existing researches are generally categorized in folk culture or Uygur ethnic group garment and processing industry, leaving some gaps in formative technology and decoration. This thesis, based on the pictures and videos acquired by exploration in person as well as the existing document resources, is aimed at conducting basic research on the artistic characteristics of the traditional earrings of Uygur ethnic group through meticulous illustration.The thesis will begin with the background of the traditional earrings. Basing on the study of their historical appearance in terms of archaeological materials, historical documents, and folk culture, the author will sort out the pictures of the traditional earrings of Uygur ethnic group by means of methodology. Then the author will present their decorating qualities through iconography study. Combing archaeological reports and foreign documents, the thesis will discuss other similar techniques and model decoration in other areas and define the relevant cultural factors. Last but by no means the least, the thesis will focus on the inheritance relationship between the contemporary and traditional earrings of Uygur ethnic group in Xinjiang.This thesis consists of seven chapters. The first chapter serves as an introduction, summarizing the study background, purpose, importance, category, key points, structure, and method of the thesis. The following chapter contributes to the demonstration of the background and related questions of the traditional earrings of Uygur ethnic group in Xinjiang. Chapter three focuses on the classification and processing techniques of the traditional earrings, illustrating in detail their manufacturing procedures and techniques through the combination of the existing study and interview on the scene. After that, the thesis concentrates on the study of the modeling and decorating features of the traditional earrings and their variants by means of computer graphics, exploring and classifying the varied modeling and decoration structures. Chapter five tries to categorize the decoration lines patterns referring to The History of Chinese Lines Patterns by Tian Zibing, Handbook on Decoration Arts, by German professor Rands,Style:Basis of Decorative Arts History by Aluowa w. Riegle, Chapter six turns to the multicultural factors of the traditional earrings of Uygur ethnic group in Xinjiang, including the unique techniques, models, decoration lines patterns and so on. The last chapter presents the earrings sold and worn by modern Uygur ethnic group, evaluating the percentage the traditional earrings account for in the current situation.The achievement of this thesis lies in the comprehensive reorganization of the traditional earrings of Uygur ethnic group in Xinjiang, especially the models and decoration of cumin earrings, analyzing their decorating features by means of picture presentation. By the comparison between the traditional earrings and alien counterparts from countries along the Silk Route, a conclusion can be safely drawn that the former is the product of cultural communication, with alien characteristics in techniques and shapes. To sum up, the traditional earrings represent cultural fusion and the unique aesthetic consciousness of Uygur ethnic group in Xinjiang.
