Hu Gangfu(1892-1966) was a famous modern Chinese physicist and educator. As a Chinese great master of physics, he devoted his life to the cause of Chinese science and physical education. He pioneered the teaching methods of modern physics experiments of China, and made Faculty of Science of ZheJiang University turn into a domestic top level in that time as a dean of Science. He also cultivated the new stars of Chinese physics, such as Wu Youxun, Yan Jici and Qian Linzhao. In all, He had made an indelible contribution to the development of modern physics of China. He was one of the most important pioneers in the history of physics in China.By studying Hu’s experiences, scientific and educational ideas, we can gain an insight into Hu’s scientific contributions and educational achievements. It is good to enrich the study of history of modern physics, promote Hu’s patriotic spirit and inspire the youngster.Based on some alumni’s memorial articles to Hu Gangfu and Hu’s own paper, referred to some research which done by predecessors, this paper shows the readers the social background and experience of Hu. It sums up Hu’s contribution to the development of physics and the physical education in our country. Hu Gangfu’s personal thoughts are also studied in the paper. Firstly, this paper briefly introduces Hu’s earlier educational background and working experiences. Then it analyses the contribution Hu made to the development of the physics of China, including the introduction of Western physics, compile scientific terms, the activities when he was in the scientific community, the establishment of Chinese scientific work. Next Hu Gangfu’s educational performance are studied, pointing out the achievement that he pioneered experimental teaching methods of physics, the development of the Faculty of Science in Zhejiang University and cultivation of the next generation of Chinese physics elites. After that, Hu’s educational thoughts are summarized. Then, it studies about Hu Gangfu’s personal cogitation of scientific research. Finally, it shows the significance of Hu’s ideas to contemporary University physics education, the scientific research and the cultivation of talents. |
