In the 1990's, foreign chain retailers began to enter Chinese market and they have gained tremendous development with continuous enlargement of China's reform and opening-up policies during the past ten years. Compared to inexperienced domestic enterprises, international retailer magnates such as Walmart, Carrefour and B&Q have much more advantages like plentiful capital, operating models and professional staff, which have brought great shocks to Chinese retailers and this situation will become worse in the coming years. National Statistic Bureau shows that, foreign retailers speed up expansion and grow healthier than domestic enterprises, although the latter still occupies the largest part in the field of chain retailing.Retailing plays a vital role in national economy; therefore, whether it can turn the tide in the competition with foreign enterprises will be significant. According to this problem, Chinese scholars have developed severe investigation and debate and they hold distinct ideas. What they concern most are the expansion speed and the so-called localization advantage; while pay little attention to detailed expansion strategies, innovation of operating models, optimization of supply chain and the value added service for consumers. Moreover, the distillation of foreign retailers'success in China is inadequate and lacks systematic statement. Concentrating on international retailers'operating strategies in China, the thesis systematically and thoroughly states and summarizes their success experiences. Then it discusses their impacts on our economy and society, analyzing the detailed strategies that domestic enterprises should take to be competitive.Chain management has a twenty-year development history in China, and it experiences the revolution of retail which has about a hundred year history in the occident.The entrance strategies of foreign-capital retail enterprises in China can be divided into four steps: Firstly, small joint-venture shareholders. The second step is proprietary joint-venture. The exclusive investment operation is the third step.
