The information age extends to the 21st century. Information processing technology develops rapidly, the internet popularizes very fast, and database technology has made great progress. Therefore, multimedia information grows explosively. The retrieval systems which rely on traditional manual annotation and text-based retrieval are far from meeting people's demand for multimedia data retrieval. How to use the rich content contains in the multimedia files, and how to enhance the efficiency and quality of multimedia information retrieval become hot issues. For this reason, it is very important to build an effective, easy-using multimedia information experiment platform.To accommodate research and experimental demand, we establish a full function multimedia information retrieval experiment platform. The researcher can use it to program, test and do experiments. This experiment platform consists of three parts. First part is background system, which is designed modularize. It formulates the unified interface for researchers and developers to carry programming and algorithm implementation. The second part is the multimedia database. It uses the Protocol Buffer, Berkeley DB and SQL Server to restore and manage the multimedia information. The third part is the multimodal human-machine interface, which can provide complete multi-modal human-machine interaction.The main work as follows:1. Analyze characteristics of multimedia retrieval, study multimedia retrieval systems and standards, design the framework and functions of the experimental platform.2. Design the interfaces and data structures of the modules in background system.3. Design the framework of the multimedia database. Use some tools to construct the database.4. Design the multi-modal human-machine interface and built a news retrieval system human-machine interface based on the experimental platform.
