Wavelength switched optical networks (WSON) which is one of important development directions of the next generation optical networks uses intelligent control plane to solve the dynamic allocation problem about wavelength channels and network resources. Transparent transmission characteristic in WSON lowers the network construction cost and increases the transmission capacity. However, the physical impairment accumulation seriously affects the quality of signal. This paper introduces tunable optical components to improve transmission quality and reduce the blocking probability of path setup through control plane's adaptive adjustment. Based on this functional requirement, this paper designs the signaling extension for impairment control (IC) in WSON.Research on WSON signaling extension is implemented in adaptive multi-service optical network (AMSON) platform. AMSON control plane contains the following three modules: signaling module, routing module and link resources management module. This paper mainly researches the signaling module. The main works of this paper are listed as bellow:(1) GMPLS control plane protocol stack in WSON is studied. Especially, the RSVP-TE signaling protocol is analyzed in detail.(2) Based on tunable optical components, control plane and transmission impairment information, two methods of WSON signaling extension are proposed. The extension about signaling process and message packet is designed in detail.(3) Based on signaling extension scheme, two methods of code implementation on Linux operating system are designed:multi-thread-based method and single-thread-based method(4) Signaling software is implemented on AMSON platform. IC function is validated through functional test.
