With the further development of equipment manufacturing industry, the request of multiple functions is more and more intense for machining center. How to fully make use of the advantages of computer technology,network technology,CAD / CAM / CAPP technology and computer information management technology to realize the virtual design for the compound machining center .and how to breakthrough the blockade of foreign technology to speed up mastering the core technology in the compound processing center field .To research and develop with independent property rights of compound machining center ,it has the great significance for promoting the rapid development of China's equipment manufacturing industry.Virtual product development is a new product development methodologies which is accompanied by the fierce market competition. This paper reviews the present situation and tendency of compound processing center in domestic and foreign, and examines the principle and application of virtual prototyping technology , it is the main elements of the virtual product development. and analysis the need for rational use for the virtual prototyping technology in the manufacturing sector ,what is more ,it also points out the roles for the virtual design in the product development process. On this basis , using a large database management system SQL 2000 and VC + + 6.0 programming software ,we build the infrastructure pieces management system based on virtual prototyping technology for the dual-spindle vertical-horizontal machining center .using the Pro/E(Pro/ENGINEER) of 3D CAD software ,we implement the parametric design and assembly of the main components and parts for dual-spindle vertical-horizontal machining center. using ANSYS of finite element analysis software ,we realize the static and modal analysis for the basis items. The results not only verify the defects it had for the design of product R & D personnel, but also provide a certain frame of reference from the theoretical to the products successful development.Be base on specific application of the virtual design technology ,it not only speeds up development of compound machining center,save costs ,but also improves the efficiency .it is more important to provides a useful reference ideas of the new virtualization design for the future research and the development of compound machining centers.
