With the rapid development of computer technology and virtual reality technology, virtual reality technology and other disciplines are becoming increasingly closer. The virtual experiment based on virtual reality research becomes one of the research focuses. However, that traditioal two-dimensional flat virtual experiment platform can no longer meet the requirements of users who pursue realistic visual effects and intense immersion. The virtual reality technology which posses the characteristics of three-dimensional visual effect by real-time rendering, especially the introduction of virtual human, has become a trend in the field of virtual experiment simulation.Doing research on virtual mechanical manufacturing and process simulation in mechanical experimental teaching in college, which always involves the operation and manipulation of large-scale machines and precision machinery, especially those with high-risk and great-expenditure when doing experiments on them, has a certain practical value for students to learn knowledge about mechanical processing and training.A virtual experimental system for machining is constructed by using Virtools and virtual human technologies, and it achieves the 3D interactive scene simulation of the mechanical manufacturing process. Inventor is used to build the three-dimensinal models. Detailed features is expressed by using texture mapping and the model simplification and optimization is done by reducing the unnecessary faces and employing LOD method. The virtual manipulation of objects and avatar using both direct control and indirect control is presented, which makes it conveninent for different users to learn and operate. Two different roaming ways, that is the automatic roaming path and the free roaming path, are designed in the system. Users can roam and interact in the virtual environment with inptut devices like mouse and keyboard, which enchances the presence of immersion. An abstract classification of the actions of virtual human has virtual experiment-oriented mission is expatiated, making it easy to management and description of virtual human.The application of virtual reality experimental system in the engineering practical teaching avoids accidents and equipment damage which will does in the reality and provides a vivid learning atmosphere and enriches the instruction mode as well as providing a brand-new experimental platform for practical education.
