Virtual instrument is an important branch of test and measurement instruments. The idea that using computer software to replace hardware by using software algorithms to achieve the functions of instruments, is proposed in virtual instrument and represents the direction of latest developments of instruments. Currently, most virtual instruments consist data acquisition cards based on PC bus which are inserted into system to compose hardware system, and software system which including the windows driver and UI. However, this VI system is unstable and inconvenient in outside or harsh environment, and its test accuracy and efficiency will be affected. With the rapid development of computer technology, various new platforms and technologies have emerged. But the original software can't be used on the new platform, and if developing a new software system to replace the original one, the cost will be increased. So, base on the above two points, a set of scheme that based on embedded system to develop VI system which can run on the multi-platform is introduced.Firstly the paper discusses the current technology background and the developing state of the VI at home and abroad in order to clear the aims and significance of the issue. And then, the development technology of embedded systems is further studied form the aspects of the basic concept and composition of embedded systems. The third chapter describes the technology of the developing in cross-platform software, which is further studying the differences among the various platforms and combined with the characteristics of virtual instrument software architecture so that proposing the development method of the cross-platform virtual instrument. Finally, the paper describes the whole development processes of the project, and comprising in detail that using Qt as the design tool and using Windows, Windows CE and Linux as test platform, then taking a virtual spectrum analyzer for example to develop a virtual instrument system through the cross-platform software development scheme. The paper describes the hardware structure and its characters of the instrument system, and then introduces the design ideas and flows of the main part of the software system and its experiment verification.Though the experiment, we can confirm that the virtual spectrum analyzer can run in on the base of finishing the dispose of the signals analysis and the effect of multi-platforms by developed once only. That is to say, it confirms that the scheme is viable and reflects the value and prospect of the scheme.
