News emotional information is usually defined as the information expressing human emotions and feelings in news reports. It includes the emotional information which is a part of news facts, e.g. the feelings of people in the news, as well as the information about the emotions expressed by the journalists, e.g. hosts sobbing and weeping in"Wenchuan earthquake"reports. In terms of the whole process of news communication, it also includes a kind of potential emotional information: the information about emotions of the audience.People can burst out different kinds of emotions in disaster situations, for example, fear, misery, sorrow, compassion, admiration, sense of responsibility, sense of community, patriotism, etc. How can we weaken the negative impact brought by negative emotions and make the most of the positive features of positive emotions without violating the principle of news authenticity and objectivity? Television journalists'emotional expression can be exposed to the audience. In the sensitive period when a major disaster occurs, how do they manage and express their emotions to conform them to the journalist identity and the disaster situation? These questions will be discussed in this thesis. This thesis analyzes domestic and foreign television coverage of major disaster incidents, and draws a conclusion that there are two communication strategies and some specific means used in television disaster reports. The two communication strategies are"eliminating the negative impact brought by negative emotions"and"strengthening the positive impact of positive emotions". The theories used in the thesis are"gatekeeper"theory and"the agenda-setting function"theory in journalism and communication and"psychological crisis"theory in psychology,"group emotion"theory in sociology and"suffering"theory in philosophy. The TV reports on"'98 flood fighting","SARS"in China,"Wenchuan earthquake"and"9.11"in the USA are analyzed with research methods of case analysis and comparative analysis. The thesis also analyzes the values of the strategies from practical and theoretical aspects and concludes that positive social effect can be realized without breaking the principle of news authenticity and objectivity by using them.
