SysML (Systems Modeling Language) is a standard modeling language that supports description, design, analysis, verification and validation of various complex systems of system engineering. These systems may include hardware, software, data, personnel, processes and facilities. SysML is an extension to UML (Unified Modeling Language) from software engineering application to system engineering application, and inherits both object-oriented modeling characteristics of UML and process-oriented structural function analysis, so it has more powerful modeling capabilities in system modeling.Several improvements in operation mode were suggested to solve the existing problems in the steel-plate stockyard operation system. During performance evaluation of the system under new operation mode, SysML was used to build the system model.First of all, SysML modeling characteristics were analyzed, then by comparing SysML and UML in modeling functions, it was specifically demonstrated that SysML has powerful description and analysis capabilities to reflect SysML with advanced nature in system modeling. Since SysML is only a modeling language in lack of system modeling methods, the paper also proposed a SysML-based system modeling approach including modeling principles and modeling process.Then, based on the previously proposed SysML-based modeling approach, the steel-plate stockyard operation system's SysML model was set up in terms of system requirements, system structure, system behavior and system constraints, to achieve visual description and analysis of the actual system.Finally, for SysML-based model is not executable, SysML model's simulation implementation method was presented, and model transformation approach was designed from SysML model to ARENA model, including transformation rules and procedures. According to this model transformation, the steel-plate stockyard operation system's SysML model was transformed and simulated with ARENA. By experimenting with ARENA model, simulation results were obtained, then system performance under the new mode was analyzed and evaluated.In summary, in the improvement of operation mode in the steel-plate stockyard operation system, SysML can be more outstanding and clearly than UML to model and analyze the target system in terms of requirement, structure, behavior, constraints of system. Our research is of importance for application of SysML to Logistics operation system. At the same time, simulation system achieving the execution of SysML model provides an effective solution for execution of SysML model.
