Fused taper Wavelength Division Multiplexer is an important optical passive device. It's a fundamental component of wavelength division system which is widely used in optical fiber communication and optical access network. The WDM can effectively use optical bandwidth resources to solve the issue of shortage of transmission media. With the rapid development of WDM technology in various fields, the requirements of fused taper WDM performance are getting higher and higher. Isolation is an important feature of WDM. The number of the index has a direct impact on communication quality. The greater the isolation, the smaller the crosstalk between channels and less effect between different wavelength signals.Firstly, this paper introduces the history and status of wavelength division multiplexing technology, and compares several common wavelength division multiplexing technologies.The second part of this paper analyses the coupled-mode theory and derives the coupling coefficient; Analyses the factors which is influencing the isolation, derives the coupled-mode equations related to isolation.In the third chapter, it introduces the fused taper WDM production process and performance testing in detail, a brief description of its package structure. It also gives a brief analysis of the different enviro nmental parameters'effect on device performance.Chapter IV of this paper is the emphasis. On one hand, it analysis the effect of process parameters on fused taper WDM and gets an conclusion that the isolation of 1310/1550 nm WDM is be inversely proportional to the pulling speed. It also gives some manufacture rules of making fused taper WDM. On the other hand, this paper introduces the improvements of production process which greatly improve efficiency and qualified rate.The final chapter focuses on the impact of different coupling region geometry on isolation. It gives a producing result and put forward ideas for future experiments.
