Nowadays fused biconical taper couplers are widely used. They are very important in the optical fiber communication system. With the rapid development of wind band optical network and FTTH, especially integrated telecommunication, computer and television network, optical fiber couplers are demanded more and more. As development of FBT, the performance of fused taper couplers is getting more attention. The performance requirements are not only optical performance parameters (such as Insertion Loss, Polarization Dependent Loss, and Excess Loss), but also the reliability performance. Now FBT couplers optical performance parameters are controlled well, but the reliability performance is not good. So studying the factors which affect the couplers' reliability is very necessary.First part of his paper introduces what the FBT couplers are and analyses their coupled-mode theory, then introduces the reliability test international standards and the importance of our experiment.The second part of this paper introduces some optical performance parameters, process flow chart and package methods.In the third chapter, it introduces the couplers anatomical process and lists the package details of different companies'couplers.Chapterâ…£of this paper is the emphasis. It shows the way we did drop test and high temperature & humidity test. The test results show how reliability difference among different companies' couplers, and indicates the factors which affect the reliability.The final chapter introduces the equipment used in the experiment and the package improvement what we did, then provides a good experiment result and proposes some ideas for future works.
