The female fashion magazines have been in China for more than 20 years, which increases its popularity among the female readers. With the social progress and the change of civil life, the intention and extension of "fashion" is changing a great deal. Fashion is so closely linked to the contemporary life that it influences the metropolitan life materially and spiritually and directs one's life style and ideological concept. However, the female image created by the fashion magazines receives denunciation from feminist researchers. It should be pointed out that most of the critics are of absolutization and extreme, with obvious mistakes in its theory. Those researchers with feminist perspective start their reading on the female image, under the pre-assumption of inequality in both gender and interests. Based on this unchangeable theoretical hypothesis, the feminists assume that the female readers have no culture insights and that they are subject to ideology. Therefore, the female images in those fashion magazines are considered stereotypes by the feminists. The objective understanding of female magazines and the existing problems within the fashion magazines is highly related to the future development of fashion magazines.Replying the"critical" above, the thesis takes ELLE as the object of study to give an in-depth interpretation on shaping the image of women by the comprehensive analysis of the texts and the images. ELLE has been in the leadership among the magazines for modern women in China since it first appeared in China in 1998.It plays a role of model and example for the development of the fashion magazines. As its growth and the forming and development of Chinese middle class are almost in the same period, the magazine perfectly saw the development of urban female group.The approach of researching the female images shaping by fashion magazines involves the ELLE.
