"The Chinese Shipping List & Advertiser"was born in Nov. 1861 and was stopped on 31st Dec.1872. It was published by North China Daily News Office."The Chinese Shipping List & Advertiser"has an important position in Chinese modern journalism history and was lead by famous Marquis Lafayette Wood, John Fryer, Young John Allen.In 1861,Shanghai's economic status had been rising gradually and replaced Hong Kong as a new press center. The publication of"The Chinese Shipping List & Advertiser"was the one of replacing marks."The Chinese Shipping List & Advertiser"had reformed its make-up in Feb.1868. Two pages had been doubled up to four pages so that the whole paper looked very eye-catching. On 24th Mar.1870, the make-up was improved that the main idea was marked by banner heading in front of every important news so that the readers understood it as soon as they saw its title. Its editing level was nouber one in that time in press of Shanghai.The style and idea of Chinese modern newspaper was controlled by general editor on the whole, so a general editor is key to success of a newspaper.
