Shang Hai New Daily was first published in 1861.The new daily had undergone several editors. When Young John Allen leaded the new daily,the daily was developing to brilliant.Whether format or content of the new daily made a difference to the people.In Shang Hai New Daily,Allen not only carried the business information,the contents of religion and western learning were increasing. Through the analysis of these content,we can see the progress of Shang Hai New Daily in introduction of western learning,appraise of the situation and traditional culture of China.Also we can know the change of Allen's missionary ideology.It based for the change of missionary mode. Shang Hai New Daily was the first experience running a newspaper and a platform of Allen's career.The experience had a great influence to Allen's missionary,newspapers,translation and so on.The thesis has five parts form the structure.The first part is the first chapter of thesis which introduced some knowledge to know Allen form birth to take over Shang Hai New Daily. It paves the way for later. The second part is focused in the second chapter.It mainly introduces the reform by Allen.The main changes are format and content.The third part includes the third chapter and the fourth chapter.It mainly analyses the content of Shang Hai New Daily when Allen leaded the newspaper.The news content and machine drawings by Allen disseminates have great influence for Chinese society.First,the article introdces the newspaper makes foreign things serve China.Then,it introdces the newspaper has great influence for Chinese political and folk. The fourth part is the fifth chapter.It discusses the reasons of Allen's left and the competition of Shang Hai New Daily and Shen Bao.The fifth part is the last chapter.This part introdces the newspaper's impact on Young John Allen and Chinese society. The limitations of Shang Hai New Daily is also one of the content.Although the most fundamental purpose of Allen was missionary.The western culture and the advanced science which were spreaded by Shang Hai New Daily had great enlightenment to Chinese at that time.The paper was undertook by western colonists.It had imperialism colour incvitably.The equality which Allen advocated was based on the basis of Chinese suffered aggression. Numerous equality was hidden in the great inequality.We should give an objective evaluation to Shang Hai New Daily. Completely positive or negative are not the correct attitude.
